Hawaii Tax Department going green-discontinues tax booklets in mail.

HONOLULU – To save money and reduce the use of paper, the State Tax Department will stop
mailing Income Tax Booklets (for example, N-11), Business Tax Booklets (for example, General
Excise) or Estimated Payment Vouchers to taxpayers’ homes or businesses.

The tax booklets with forms and instructions are available for reading and/or printing on-line at:
www.hawaii.gov/tax, as well as at any Tax Department offices.
The department encourages taxpayers to electronically file and pay the N-13 (income tax short
form), General Excise, Withholding, and Transient Accommodations tax returns for free at
www.hawaii.gov/tax - it’s easy, fast and accurate.

Note: Not receiving or requesting a tax booklet does not relieve taxpayers of the requirement to file tax returns.

For more information contact:
Sandi Yahiro
Deputy Director of Taxation

Another one bites the dust-ATA Airlines cancels all flights and files bankruptcy!

15780526_240x180.jpgATA Airlines announced  that it has canceled all future flights. ATA Airlines filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday because of financial problems. The Indianapolis-based, low cost airline said it loss a key contract for military charters.

“We deeply regret the disruption and hardship caused by the sudden shutdown of ATA, an outcome we and our employees had worked very hard and made many sacrifices to avoid. Unfortunately, the cancellation of a critical agreement for our military charter business undermined ATA’s plan to address the current conditions facing all scheduled service airlines, including the tremendous spike in the price of jet fuel in recent months. As a result, it became impossible for ATA to continue operating,” ATA Chief Operating Officer Doug Yakola said in a written statement.

ATA averaged about 15 flights daily to and from Hawaii from Phoenix, Los Angeles, Oakland, Calif.; and Las Vegas and employed about 50 people locally.

People who purchased tickets from ATA using a credit card can contact their credit card company for more information about how to get a refund for unused tickets.

Here are ATA FAQs for passengers.T

The shutdown comes on the heels of Aloha Airlines’ closure on Monday.

Aloha to ALOHA AIRLINES

gj_aloha-b737-297.jpg

SOURCE: Pacific Business News (Honolulu) – by Jim Kelly

While Aloha Airlines customers won’t be stranded, those with reservations for future flights or who want a refund will face some challenges.

Aloha said passengers with confirmed reservations for travel after March 31 should contact its code-share partner, United Airlines, or Hawaiian Airlines, which has offered to honor Aloha tickets on a first-come, first-served basis through April 3.

But passengers should probably be ready to be flexible with travel dates and times and possibly destinations, especially if heading to the Mainland. Also prepare for some wait-time on the phone with various airlines’ customer service agents; your reservations may not be able to be processed online.

hawaii.gifHawaiian Airlines said it has a special link on its Web site (hawaiianairlines.com) for Aloha passengers or they can call 1-877-892-8896 for a recorded message.

While promising to honor Aloha ticket-holders this week, Hawaiian said travel is on standby and for only one trip at a time; roundtrips aren’t guaranteed.

“Due to the expected high demand for seats, standby travelers are not asured of receiving a confirmed boarding that meets their desired travel schedule,” Hawaiian said.

What about a refund? On its Web site, Aloha says only to “contact your travel agent or credit card company to request a refund.”

For those paying by check or cash, Aloha says you’ll have to file a claim with the bankruptcy court.

united_small.jpgCustomers who used miles in Aloha’s frequent flyer program, AlohaPass, to book travel awards on United will still get their free trips. (The AlohaPass MasterCards, issued by First Hawaiian Bank, are still good and will probably end up being collector’s items).

But for those with lots of miles in AlohaPass, you’re probably out of luck trying to redeem them. History shows that the miles expire with the airline and bankruptcy courts don’t look on accumulated miles or points as “debts.”

Mandate solar hot water heating -KAUAI

Solar hot water heaters can save families thousands of dollars on energy costs and reduce the county’s reliance on imported oil, yet most homes persist without the technology, officials said yesterday.

After developing legislation with community members over the past three years, County Councilwoman JoAnn Yukimura said she has plans to introduce a bill at the local level that could change this trend.

passivesolar.jpgThe proposed ordinance would require solar hot water heaters on all new single-family units and duplex residential construction on Kaua‘i.

“We are moving as a global community from cheap, abundant fossil fuel to scarce, expensive fossil fuel,” she said. “We need to protect our community against ever-rising prices and dependence on fossil fuels.”

Yukimura will serve on an expert panel discussing the technology at 6 p.m. Monday at the Mo‘ikeha Building in meeting rooms 2A-2B. Apollo Kaua‘i, a grassroots energy alternatives group, is hosting the meeting.

Anahola Bakery, Hanapape HI

hawaii801300408ar.jpg Becky Burns, founder of Anahola Granola, a Kaua’i-based company that produces a variety of granola products, kept her business small “so that I could keep a handle on everything.”

Becky Burns started Anahola Granola on Kauai in 1986. What began as a favorite dish served at social gatherings, grew into pounds sold at fairs, farmer’s markets and specialty stores. Becky made and sold her granola for many years while running the Deco Gecko Café in Kapaa.

Anahola Granola continues to grow each year, but is still run as a cottage industry and small business. Although Becky’s vision of keeping her business small goes against the modern business model, it ensures quality control and consistency in the product.

gift_basket_7502.jpgAnahola Granola has three flavors of granola in various package sizes and “Maca Mania” granola bars. Anahola Granola is sold in most Kaua’i stores, and Burns has expanded sales to more than 100 stores and upscale hotels on Kaua’i, O’ahu and Maui. Read the rest of the story here.

The Anahola Granola Building also has rental apartments, a orchid center in the back, and is the home of FARSYDE TATTOO.
